City of Bath Triathlon 2010

Thursday, July 29th, 2010

It’s not been a bad summer at all so far this year and as the Amphibs toiled away on Saturday 10th, to prepare the STV for the 2010 City of Bath Triathlon and the competitors arrived to register and recce transition, the sun continued to burn down. As the day progressed, fences, signs and of course competitors’ anxiety levels, all went up, ready for Sunday’s race. With about half the entrants registered on Saturday, the race’s all inclusive status was in evidence as transition started to fill up with bikes of all shapes and sizes. We had everything from full carbon TT dream machines to full suspension mountain bikes (now that’s how to man up). The early morning rain that we’d organised to cool things down a little, duly stopped and with the later waves now registering, resident scruff bag and pint sized Club Coach and all round dispenser of triathlon related nuggets of wisdom, Doug, got the first nervous swimmers underway.

2010-tri-006

The first Olympic distance athlete out of the pool was John Wood from what must be the biggest tri club in the UK by now - BADTri, with a ridiculous time of 19:25, well done that man. The rest came thick and fast after him (mostly). You can never guarantee that you won’t start to run a little behind schedule when wave start times are based on competitors estimated swim times and a note to athletes for next year; getting your swim time wrong by a couple of minutes either way won’t make any real difference, but getting it wrong by 18 minutes can result in disgruntled competitors complaining to us after the race that they missed their free massage. You have been warned - know your swim speed or you may deprive someone of a well earned leg rubbing.

Whilst the roads were drying nicely in the summer sun by the time the first cyclists were on the 40k loop, the winter weather hadn’t been quite so kind, leaving the roads out of Bath and through the Somerset countryside a tad third world. As appalling as some of the road surfaces are at points, several club members had ridden the course shortly before the race and declared it a great simulation of parts of the cobbled stage of this years Tour De France. We aim to please. Some of our cyclists might not have enjoyed the tough, not for the feint hearted course, but any alternative route would have involved equally poor roads that would also have included too many right turns and traffic lights. What can we say, this is England.

2010-tri-010

It was a pretty still day which allowed for some sharp times on both bike loops. The quickest being Matt Newman from Moti Giant BADTri (representing enough people there Matt?) who got around the hilly Olympic course in 1:07:52 and Chris Hayward of Brecon Multisport who cleared the only slightly less hilly Sprint loop in 45:21. Good work both.

Meanwhile, back at the STV, the swimmers from the sprint waves continued to pour out of the 50m pool and into the blinding sunshine, some looking to clear transition in as quick a time as possible, others, less worried about their time than with enjoying the event, chatting to fellow competitors whilst towelling themselves down.

2010-tri-002
Behind the scenes the amphibs crew frantically saw to it that there were plenty of water stations, each with enough water and SIS to drown the England football team (now there’s a thought).

2010-tri-004

The amazing work done by the small army of club members and their family and friends on the bike loops was replicated and continued in transition and out onto the brilliant mixed terrain run course that we have just off the University campus. Whilst not many competitors would have felt like taking in the views by this point in their race, you’ll have to trust us that they are pretty special. The fastest run times of the day go to Matt Newman on the 10k loop with 35:39 and to Chris Hayward on the 5k loop with 18:39.

It’s a shame that due to various construction projects up at the uni we couldn’t keep our usual grandstand finish of the running track just under the terrace, but resident MC Michael Sidey kept the atmosphere going in the sunshine on the sports field next door instead.

After a horrendously early start for all concerned, by 3.30pm, most of our brilliant competitors and our tireless marshals were rewarding themselves with a cold beer and if you’d have been up at the STV, you’d never have known anything had happened.

Massive thanks to all our competitors, to the referees, to the organisers, to the marshals, to our sponsors and to the sun. Same again next year…

the Bath Amphibians web site on Sunday 4

1 GENERAL INFORMATION

This is the twelfth year that Bath Amphibians Triathlon Club has organised a triathlon at the

University of Bath Sports Training Village (STV). The facilities at the STV are superb. We at

Bath Amphibians Triathlon Club are both pleased and privileged to be associated with these

facilities and hope that you will have a great race and a memorable day.

CHANGES FROM PREVIOUS YEARS

Please note, especially the warnings about the bike course for the standard distance course.

DIRECTIONS

The university campus is situated on Claverton Down, to the east of Bath. The A4 and A36

roads run through the city; the M4 motorway is approximately 10 miles to the north. For more

information (including maps) visit the University’s web site at

 http://www.bath.ac.uk/gettinghere/

To get to the STV, go down the university’s main driveway for about 400 metres, where the

road bends left, then bends right, and the STV will then be the large building on your right.

To find directions using your favourite internet map engine, the university postcode is BA2

7AY.

PARKING

There are several car parks on the university campus, close to the STV. The largest of these

is behind the STV and this will be signposted: turn right just after you have gone past the

main entrance to the STV and before you get to the main university bus stop. There may be

a charge – please check signs for the latest information.

CHANGING FACILITIES / TOILETS

Toilets, changing facilities and showers are located within the STV. Access points will be

signposted. The STV is a non-smoking centre. No animals (apart from guide dogs) are

permitted within the facilities. Spectators may be required to pay 50p on entry to the STV.

FOOD

During and after the race there will be a range of refreshments in the STV cafe, together with

trade stands selling triathlon kit, bikes, etc

MEDICAL ADVICE

If you feel unwell on race day then please don’t race. If you have any medical condition (eg

asthma, allergies) then write the details on the back of your race number using a waterproof

pen and put a cross on the front of your number. If you are in difficulty (or see anyone else in

difficulty) during the race please inform the nearest marshal. There will be an ambulance with

trained paramedics and a doctor who will all be based at the Sports Training Village.

RACE PHOTOGRAPHS

Race photography is provided by Evokpics. To make their job easier please place the label

with your race number on the FRONT of your cycling helmet. Details of your photographs will

be found on

www.bathamphibians.co.uk after the race and in the STV on race day.

REFUND POLICY

Our refund policy is designed to be fair to you, us and other competitors, and is one of the

most generous for any race. To withdraw, email triathlon@bathamphibians.co.uk.

1. Cancellation 18th June or earlier - full refund minus £5 administration costs.

2. Cancellation 19th June to 5th July - 50% refund

3. Cancellation 6th July or later - no refunds

MARSHALS

If you’re having a bad day, don’t take it out on a marshal. Remember they’ve given up their

weekend to lay on the race for you. Please listen to them and follow their instructions. Give

them a smile and a wave if you have the energy!

2 RACE INFORMATION

will mean you will have to purchase a BTA day licence at registration at a cost of £5.

RACE RULES

rules below may result in disqualification. – For all BTA competition rules see

http://www.britishtriathlon.org/events/page.php?article=&category=/events/&folder=rules/

2. The decision of the race referee is final. Race marshal’s instructions should be obeyed at

all times.

3. Race numbers must be clearly visible at all times. Race belts are acceptable; if you are

wearing a race belt, ensure that your number is clearly visible to the back for the bike and the

front for the run. Do not fold your number – you will be penalised.

CHANGES TO THE COURSE FROM PREVIOUS YEARS

Road works and other eventualities may require late changes to the courses. Check the Bath

Amphibians website, information boards at registration, and listen to the briefing before your

swim for any updates on the day.

THANK YOU!

We would like to thank all the people who have provided us with the help and support

necessary to stage the race. This includes the University of Bath, Sports Training Village,

MOTI, Avon Valley Cyclery and of course all the members of Bath Amphibians Triathlon Club

and other volunteers who have generously given up their time on race day and in the

weeks/months leading up to it.

3 REGISTRATION & TRANSITION

REGISTRATION

Registration will take place in the registration/information tent outside the front of the STV

between:

• 1600 and 1800 hrs on Saturday

• 0630 and 0930 hrs on Sunday

There is only limited registration on the Sunday. To avoid long queues and the risk of

missing your wave, we encourage participants to register on the Saturday.

Competitors must bring their bike helmet (must be SNELL or ANSI approved) and BTA

licence (if a BTA member) to registration. YOU NEED TO REGISTER BEFORE YOU RACK

YOUR BIKE IN TRANSITION.

At registration you will receive your race numbers, stickers for your bike and stickers for your

bike helmet. You will also receive your timing chip. Attach the chip to your

LEFT ankle,

ensuring that during the race it is not covered by any clothing, such as socks. You will need

to return your chip at the end of the race. If you do not, we will need to charge you at cost to

replace the chip.

TRANSITION AREA AND BIKE RACKING

The transition area is located in the gold member’s car park, which is alongside the astro-turf

pitches and directly behind the 50m swimming pool. No parking will be allowed on the roads

around transition. Bikes should be wheeled to transition from one of the university car parks.

Note that:

Racking of bikes will only be available on Sunday morning – transition will open from 0630.

Only competitors will be allowed into transition.

At registration you will be provided with a label with your race number, to be attached to

your bike. You will not be allowed to rack your bike without this.

Your bike must be racked in the space corresponding to your race number.

After the race you will not be allowed back into the transition area and bikes will not be

permitted to be removed, until the last competitor has started on the run. You must also

have your race number, and this must match that on your bike label in order to remove

your bike.

No cycling in the transition area at any time; before during or after the race

When racking your bike, please show consideration for other competitors. Please listen

to marshals’ instructions and leave the area as soon as you have racked your bike.

4 THE SWIM. 1500M STANDARD (OLYMPIC) / 750M SPRINT

Olympic Distance - 30 lengths of the pool (1500m).

Sprint Distance - 15 lengths of the pool (750m).

For the Sprint Distance, competitors will start at the opposite end of the pool to the exit. The

swim will be organised in ‘waves’, with the Standard Distance competitors going first,

followed by the Sprint competitors. Your race number and swim wave number will be

published on the Bath Amphibians web site one week before the start date of the race.

Estimated wave times are given in the table below, but please recheck once the start times

are published.

Competitors within each wave will be allocated so they all have similar estimated swim times.

However, the waves will not necessarily be in order of swim ability. Ie, if you are a fast

swimmer, do not necessary expect to be in the first or last waves.

Please be at the poolside 15 minutes before your allocated start time for the race

briefing.

Proceed to your lane when instructed by the pool supervisor - you will be instructed as to

which lane to use and which rotational order to swim in.

You will be issued with a swim hat, which must be worn throughout the swim and handed

to the lane marshal on exiting the water.

No swim aids, flippers, wetsuits, etc may be worn. Goggles and nose clips are permitted.

All competitors must start in the water - no diving.

Overtaking may take place in the middle of the lane. Alternatively, you may touch the foot

of the swimmer in front, who is then obliged to let you pass at the end of that length.

No backstroke or butterfly is permitted.

The lane marshal will indicate when you have 2 lengths remaining to swim, by placing a

board in the water in front of you - please look out for these boards.

On completing the swim, exit the water and return your swim cap to the marshal.

Proceed to the pool exit point, taking care not to slip.

The swim time ends, and the cycle time begins, when you exit the pool building.

5 THE BIKE. 40KM STANDARD (OLYMPIC) / 25KM SPRINT

Bike course notes.

YOU MUST OBEY the Highway Code just like any other road-user. Failure to do so will

result in disqualification. There will be marshals and yellow signs on the course to direct you.

Details of any road works on the route you should be aware of will be available at

registration.

For an online map of the Standard route, see

http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=1558256.

After leaving the transition area, turn left onto University Drive, heading away from the

university. At the T-junction turn left.

1.5K Carry on over the mini roundabout (1 o clock)

5.2K Carry straight on at the double mini-roundabout at the Esso garage, towards Radstock.

Take care – this mini roundabout can get busy.

5.8K Turn left at the roundabout for Peasedown / Radstock / Exeter on the A367

6.6K At Odd Down Roundabout (park and ride), take the third exit, continuing on the A367.

8.1K There is a long fast descent with a Y-junction after 400m; (keep to the left on the A367

but beware of cars in your lane slowing to turn right or coming in tight into your lane). Take

care. Do not overtake queuing cars on the right hand side.

There is a left bend with a slight negative camber at the bottom of the descent followed by a

long climb (Dunkerton Hill) up to the Peasedown St John roundabout.

11.2K At the Peasedown St John roundabout keep to the left hand lane at the top and

continue on the A367 for Radstock

12.7K At the next roundabout (1 mile further along the A367)

Sprint Competitors will turn

around and follow the course back into the University of Bath Sports Training Village.

Standard (Olympic) competitors

carry straight on across the roundabout to Shoscombe.

After a long straight the road sweeps down to the right for a fast descent into Radstock.

16.7K As you approach the town take the left hand lane. At the mini-roundabout turn left on

the road signed for Frome (A362). There will be marshals and race signs to direct you. Use

caution at the mini-roundabout as this is a tight, busy 90° left turn! Be extra careful if the road

surface is wet, Slow Down! This is a dangerous turn and cannot be taken safely if you are

going too fast.

There is a climb out of Radstock. Stay on this road until you reach a crossroads at the very

top of Terry Hill.

20K At Terry Hill crossroads, turn left taking A366 to Trowbridge.

Follow this road for several miles to Norton St Phillip and the first junction. There is a short

steep climb up to the junction.

26.7 K Turn left for Hinton Charterhouse/Midford/Bath.

The road out of Norton St Phillip has traffic calming measures.

Proceed through Hinton Charterhouse; after the village is a long fast descent into Midford.

After 30m of the descent there is a hairpin bend to the left .

Take extra care at this corner

– slow down and watch for oncoming traffic.

In Midford the road narrows and starts a long, steep climb. Follow the road all the way back

into Bath, climbing all the way. Continue to a set of mini-roundabouts (crossed earlier), turn

right and return to the university.

40K Turn right at University drive and return to transition.

6 THE RUN. 10KM STANDARD (OLYMPIC) / 5KM SPRINT

The run follows a measured 5km route over public footpaths and on paths and pavements in

the University area. The off road stretches are almost entirely grassed, so trail shoes are not

necessary. Apart from one short climb there are no steep gradients. Please note the

following safety points

At several points on the course, runners are going in both directions. Take care, and

always keep to the right.

The path leading up towards the golf course narrows at one point due to building

works. Please take care here.

The golf course is out of bounds. At no point do competitors need to cross the golf

course. The course does follow alongside the left hand side of the course several

times. When it does, competitors should keep as far left as possible and be aware of

possible wayward golf shots.

The slope leading from Sham Castle finishes in a low concrete stile. Please step over

it. Do not risk your own and other people’s safety by trying to jump over it.

Shortly afterwards, there is a low hanging branch. Take care when passing under or

around this.

At the end of the first circuit, Standard distance competitors turn left to start their second lap,

and Sprint distance competitors split off right towards the Sports Village to the finish in the

field adjacent to the running track. This will be clearly marked, and marshals will be there to

assist.

However, IT IS EACH COMPETITOR’S RESPONSIBILITY TO MAKE SURE HE/SHE

COMPLETES THE CORRECT NUMBER OF LAPS. Please remember that STANDARD

COMPETITORS COMPLETE 2 LAPS, AND SPRINT COMPETITORS COMPLETE 1 LAP;

make sure you take the right turning!

There are water stations near the start of the course/start of 10k lap 2, and after the concrete

stile.

Big shout for the Mumblers

Tri Mumblin’

Fully gee’ed up by our resident Taff Dazzler, seven Amphibs plus support crossed the (over-priced) bridge to loll about in the sun, get drunk, eat lots and do some surfing.  Oh, and take part in the inaugural Mumbles Triathlon.

Chairdude Dan was tagged in for all except the race, but despite the frustration at watching his club mates ready themselves at the start line, knowing that without Achilles tendons the size of the structural cables supporting the Severn Bridge he would’ve eaten the course for breakfast and challenged for a podium, he supported and recorded like a personal coach. Sweet work dude.

With a crazy start time on the Saturday everyone piled down/up/over to the Gower on Friday night, with Jo Swallow’s mates Claire and Will joining us for Claire’s first ever Triathlon. Somehow, despite the confusion of thinking we were booked into the campsite (with reportedly the Best view in the World) that we weren’t booked into at all, The Team ended up (with the exception of Jo Starr) altogether by the time darkness fell, registered and with our quality, near-as-damn-it transparent, generic white t-shirts in the bag before we’d even raced. We all got a few hours sleep before the 5 am roll call.

It was obvious that the day was going to be another scorcher and suddenly a 7 am mass start didn’t seem like such a daft idea. Racked in the free-for-all transition area and ready to rumble were the short sprinters, Claire and Streety, and the long sprinters, Jo (part I), Jo (part II), Kezza, Aido, Sheks and Mikey B. Teammates but still competitive, all jostled for a decent start position prior to the one lap 750-m swim from the slipway by the marina. Dan was doing the club proud with a prime spectator spot, plenty of cheers and camera in tow.

The swim was perfect with clean, still and beautifully warm waters as well as clear sights to each buoy on the triangular course. Not surprisingly, Jo Swallow was first Amphib out of the drink and with her current form, was anyone going to eat into her bike and/or run times? If anyone was it was Aido and both he and Jo* weren’t far behind going into T1. Mere moments later came Baker, Kezza and Streety, exiting the water within seconds of each other. Streety, with about 2 h of training in the last three months under her belt, had opted for the short sprint so was in a race with the miniscule Welsh junior whipper-snappers. After the slickest of slick transitions from Kez (you gotta get ahead any way you can), nipping out of T1 in front of a clumsy-arse Baker, the long sprint race was on between those two.

Meanwhile and in true ‘Sheks style’ race prep of finishing a midnight shift before driving over from Bristol to sleep in the transition area in her van, Anna was having a solid swim as was Jo’s mate Claire, taking part in her first Triathlon.

Whether you were going for the full 32-k bike loop or the 21-k option, you had some hills to negotiate. My word, were there some hills. If 1 in 4 inclines aren’t your bag, avoid this race and if climbing steadily for several kilometres is also not your bag, then again, avoid this race. With the exception of the odd 50 yards here and there these bike loops were about either going up, or coming down. With the Amphibs prepped by Bannerdown, North Road and Widcombe reps though, they were a cycling force to be reckoned with. The 32-k loop was really nice, just the right combination of technical and long rolling sections on the bars.

imgp0302

Everyone had their own adventure on the bike leg, but some suffered more than others. From being snotted on whilst performing an overtaking manoeuvre (Mikey B), getting off to open a gate instead of riding over the cattle grid (Jo*), damn near having a T-bone collision at 50 kph with a cow that stepped out into the road (Mikey B), good old fashion falling off and scraping their leg open (Jo*), snapping cleats and rendering them nigh on useless (Mikey B), etc., it was really between two Amphibs for the worst-bike-leg accolade.

Jo Swallow kept her lead on the bike and with uncannily similar bike times (when you factor in the various transition abilities among the group) the order remained as it was leaving T1. Aido had far too much to do on the run to reel in Jo and she, quite frankly, was handing it to everyone and comfortably finished first Amphib, first female and 6th over all. How do you like them apples?! Despite Aido’s proven gazelle-like run, after the sun-drenched, bury-yourself, nowhere-to-hide, hard-as-nails, flat-out-and-back 5 k he had to concede second Amphib to his training buddy.

Meanwhile Dan had been adopting the role of MC in the same vein as the sprint finish at the Castle Combe Duathlons and was joined by Streety after she finished 4th female (amazingly let down only by her swim and would otherwise have surely taken second to a sprint racer who actually beat Jo Swallow out of the water…?!). The announcer was getting used to shouting out the names of the Amphibs athletes and it was great to hear the club get so many mentions, as well as get cheered on by those already finished.

imgp0314

Aido cruised in a very short distance behind Jo Swallow, having increased his lead over Mike and Kez on the run. A km behind him and Mike just managed to reel Kez in at the 2.5k marker. Instead of being on the end of a face full of abuse as he did this, Mike was instead instructed by Kez to ‘keep it up and take that bloke up ahead’. Mike knows that Kez is to be obeyed and reeled said chap in, but didn’t quite have enough left to catch the next one. Kez came half a minute later in the end and the team re-grouped to cheer on a bleeding but happy Jo* and a knackered but also happy Sheks.

New records were then set in the faff stakes as the team cleared transition and returned, victorious for the presentation before eating, drinking and surfing their way through the rest of the weekend.
Same again next year me thinks. Maybe with Dazzler in tow…
