1 GENERAL INFORMATION
This is the twelfth year that Bath Amphibians Triathlon Club has organised a triathlon at the
University of Bath Sports Training Village (STV). The facilities at the STV are superb. We at
Bath Amphibians Triathlon Club are both pleased and privileged to be associated with these
facilities and hope that you will have a great race and a memorable day.
CHANGES FROM PREVIOUS YEARS
Please note, especially the warnings about the bike course for the standard distance course.
DIRECTIONS
The university campus is situated on Claverton Down, to the east of Bath. The A4 and A36
roads run through the city; the M4 motorway is approximately 10 miles to the north. For more
information (including maps) visit the University’s web site at
http://www.bath.ac.uk/gettinghere/
To get to the STV, go down the university’s main driveway for about 400 metres, where the
road bends left, then bends right, and the STV will then be the large building on your right.
To find directions using your favourite internet map engine, the university postcode is BA2
7AY.
PARKING
There are several car parks on the university campus, close to the STV. The largest of these
is behind the STV and this will be signposted: turn right just after you have gone past the
main entrance to the STV and before you get to the main university bus stop. There may be
a charge – please check signs for the latest information.

CHANGING FACILITIES / TOILETS
Toilets, changing facilities and showers are located within the STV. Access points will be
signposted. The STV is a non-smoking centre. No animals (apart from guide dogs) are
permitted within the facilities. Spectators may be required to pay 50p on entry to the STV.
FOOD
During and after the race there will be a range of refreshments in the STV cafe, together with
trade stands selling triathlon kit, bikes, etc
MEDICAL ADVICE
If you feel unwell on race day then please don’t race. If you have any medical condition (eg
asthma, allergies) then write the details on the back of your race number using a waterproof
pen and put a cross on the front of your number. If you are in difficulty (or see anyone else in
difficulty) during the race please inform the nearest marshal. There will be an ambulance with
trained paramedics and a doctor who will all be based at the Sports Training Village.
RACE PHOTOGRAPHS
Race photography is provided by Evokpics. To make their job easier please place the label
with your race number on the FRONT of your cycling helmet. Details of your photographs will
be found on
www.bathamphibians.co.uk after the race and in the STV on race day.
REFUND POLICY
Our refund policy is designed to be fair to you, us and other competitors, and is one of the
most generous for any race. To withdraw, email triathlon@bathamphibians.co.uk.
1. Cancellation 18th June or earlier - full refund minus £5 administration costs.
2. Cancellation 19th June to 5th July - 50% refund

MARSHALS

them a smile and a wave if you have the energy!

rules below may result in disqualification. – For all BTA competition rules see

2. The decision of the race referee is final. Race marshal’s instructions should be obeyed at

CHANGES TO THE COURSE FROM PREVIOUS YEARS
Road works and other eventualities may require late changes to the courses. Check the Bath
Amphibians website, information boards at registration, and listen to the briefing before your
swim for any updates on the day.
THANK YOU!
We would like to thank all the people who have provided us with the help and support
necessary to stage the race. This includes the University of Bath, Sports Training Village,
MOTI, Avon Valley Cyclery and of course all the members of Bath Amphibians Triathlon Club
and other volunteers who have generously given up their time on race day and in the
weeks/months leading up to it.
3 REGISTRATION & TRANSITION
REGISTRATION
Registration will take place in the registration/information tent outside the front of the STV
between:
• 1600 and 1800 hrs on Saturday
• 0630 and 0930 hrs on Sunday
There is only limited registration on the Sunday. To avoid long queues and the risk of
missing your wave, we encourage participants to register on the Saturday.
Competitors must bring their bike helmet (must be SNELL or ANSI approved) and BTA
licence (if a BTA member) to registration. YOU NEED TO REGISTER BEFORE YOU RACK
YOUR BIKE IN TRANSITION.
At registration you will receive your race numbers, stickers for your bike and stickers for your
bike helmet. You will also receive your timing chip. Attach the chip to your
LEFT ankle,
ensuring that during the race it is not covered by any clothing, such as socks. You will need
to return your chip at the end of the race. If you do not, we will need to charge you at cost to
replace the chip.
TRANSITION AREA AND BIKE RACKING
The transition area is located in the gold member’s car park, which is alongside the astro-turf
pitches and directly behind the 50m swimming pool. No parking will be allowed on the roads
around transition. Bikes should be wheeled to transition from one of the university car parks.
Note that:
•
Racking of bikes will only be available on Sunday morning – transition will open from 0630.
•
Only competitors will be allowed into transition.
•
At registration you will be provided with a label with your race number, to be attached to
your bike. You will not be allowed to rack your bike without this.
•
Your bike must be racked in the space corresponding to your race number.
•
After the race you will not be allowed back into the transition area and bikes will not be
permitted to be removed, until the last competitor has started on the run. You must also
have your race number, and this must match that on your bike label in order to remove
your bike.
•
No cycling in the transition area at any time; before during or after the race
Page 5 of 8
•
When racking your bike, please show consideration for other competitors. Please listen
to marshals’ instructions and leave the area as soon as you have racked your bike.
4 THE SWIM. 1500M STANDARD (OLYMPIC) / 750M SPRINT
•
Olympic Distance - 30 lengths of the pool (1500m).
•
Sprint Distance - 15 lengths of the pool (750m).
For the Sprint Distance, competitors will start at the opposite end of the pool to the exit. The
swim will be organised in ‘waves’, with the Standard Distance competitors going first,
followed by the Sprint competitors. Your race number and swim wave number will be
published on the Bath Amphibians web site one week before the start date of the race.
Estimated wave times are given in the table below, but please recheck once the start times
are published.
Competitors within each wave will be allocated so they all have similar estimated swim times.
However, the waves will not necessarily be in order of swim ability. Ie, if you are a fast
swimmer, do not necessary expect to be in the first or last waves.

•
You will be issued with a swim hat, which must be worn throughout the swim and handed

•
No swim aids, flippers, wetsuits, etc may be worn. Goggles and nose clips are permitted.

Proceed to the pool exit point, taking care not to slip.
The swim time ends, and the cycle time begins, when you exit the pool building.

5 THE BIKE. 40KM STANDARD (OLYMPIC) / 25KM SPRINT
Bike course notes.
YOU MUST OBEY the Highway Code just like any other road-user. Failure to do so will
result in disqualification. There will be marshals and yellow signs on the course to direct you.
Details of any road works on the route you should be aware of will be available at
registration.
For an online map of the Standard route, see
http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=1558256.
After leaving the transition area, turn left onto University Drive, heading away from the
university. At the T-junction turn left.
1.5K Carry on over the mini roundabout (1 o clock)
5.2K Carry straight on at the double mini-roundabout at the Esso garage, towards Radstock.
Take care – this mini roundabout can get busy.
5.8K Turn left at the roundabout for Peasedown / Radstock / Exeter on the A367
6.6K At Odd Down Roundabout (park and ride), take the third exit, continuing on the A367.
8.1K There is a long fast descent with a Y-junction after 400m; (keep to the left on the A367
but beware of cars in your lane slowing to turn right or coming in tight into your lane). Take
care. Do not overtake queuing cars on the right hand side.
There is a left bend with a slight negative camber at the bottom of the descent followed by a
long climb (Dunkerton Hill) up to the Peasedown St John roundabout.
11.2K At the Peasedown St John roundabout keep to the left hand lane at the top and
continue on the A367 for Radstock
12.7K At the next roundabout (1 mile further along the A367)
Sprint Competitors will turn
around and follow the course back into the University of Bath Sports Training Village.
Standard (Olympic) competitors
carry straight on across the roundabout to Shoscombe.
After a long straight the road sweeps down to the right for a fast descent into Radstock.
16.7K As you approach the town take the left hand lane. At the mini-roundabout turn left on
the road signed for Frome (A362). There will be marshals and race signs to direct you. Use
caution at the mini-roundabout as this is a tight, busy 90° left turn! Be extra careful if the road
surface is wet, Slow Down! This is a dangerous turn and cannot be taken safely if you are
going too fast.
There is a climb out of Radstock. Stay on this road until you reach a crossroads at the very
top of Terry Hill.
20K At Terry Hill crossroads, turn left taking A366 to Trowbridge.
Follow this road for several miles to Norton St Phillip and the first junction. There is a short
steep climb up to the junction.
26.7 K Turn left for Hinton Charterhouse/Midford/Bath.
The road out of Norton St Phillip has traffic calming measures.
Proceed through Hinton Charterhouse; after the village is a long fast descent into Midford.
After 30m of the descent there is a hairpin bend to the left .
Take extra care at this corner
– slow down and watch for oncoming traffic.
In Midford the road narrows and starts a long, steep climb. Follow the road all the way back
into Bath, climbing all the way. Continue to a set of mini-roundabouts (crossed earlier), turn
right and return to the university.
40K Turn right at University drive and return to transition.
6 THE RUN. 10KM STANDARD (OLYMPIC) / 5KM SPRINT
The run follows a measured 5km route over public footpaths and on paths and pavements in
the University area. The off road stretches are almost entirely grassed, so trail shoes are not
necessary. Apart from one short climb there are no steep gradients. Please note the
following safety points
•
•
At several points on the course, runners are going in both directions. Take care, and
always keep to the right.
•
The path leading up towards the golf course narrows at one point due to building
works. Please take care here.
•
The golf course is out of bounds. At no point do competitors need to cross the golf
course. The course does follow alongside the left hand side of the course several
times. When it does, competitors should keep as far left as possible and be aware of
possible wayward golf shots.
•
The slope leading from Sham Castle finishes in a low concrete stile. Please step over
it. Do not risk your own and other people’s safety by trying to jump over it.
•
Shortly afterwards, there is a low hanging branch. Take care when passing under or
around this.
At the end of the first circuit, Standard distance competitors turn left to start their second lap,
and Sprint distance competitors split off right towards the Sports Village to the finish in the
field adjacent to the running track. This will be clearly marked, and marshals will be there to
assist.
However, IT IS EACH COMPETITOR’S RESPONSIBILITY TO MAKE SURE HE/SHE
COMPLETES THE CORRECT NUMBER OF LAPS. Please remember that STANDARD
COMPETITORS COMPLETE 2 LAPS, AND SPRINT COMPETITORS COMPLETE 1 LAP;
make sure you take the right turning!
There are water stations near the start of the course/start of 10k lap 2, and after the concrete
stile.

After the finish area you will need to remove your chip and hand it to the marshal on duty. A
charge will be made for any chips which are not returned.
